We started all of our kids in homeschool, so they never went to elementary school. I think I was the typical dad who basically said "go for it, do what you want, I'll support you" but I was too busy with work to be involved. My wife made curriculum choices, and was the teacher, while I was at work.
As my kids got older I knew that would change. I wanted to be involved, and some opportunities come up where I could be involved. But I wasn't sure I wanted to be "that dad" who was 100% involved. One night, on the way to a homeschool meeting, my wife sternly warned me to not say anything offensive to this new group of friends... something about "drinking the kool-aid" or anything that had to do with brainwashing or raw foods (all of which can, in some way, be associated to a bunch of homeschool parents).
I had to experience my own journey. I didn't realize that some of the dads who looked like kool-aid drinkers were also going down their own journey of really buying into the ideas we were talking about. But once I saw the fruit of homeschooling, especially for pre-teens and teens, I was completely bought in, and felt a duty to be involved.
